“Trump is not a king” – California Governor
In an official statement, Governor Gavin Newsom expressed his disappointment with the Ninth Circuit Court’s decision to let President Trump continue to command the California National Guard, but he also hailed one component of the court’s decision as a win.
The Democratic governor declared early Friday morning on X that Trump is “not a king and not above the law.”
“Trump’s argument that he can use the National Guard whatever he pleases and avoid having to defend himself in court was correctly dismissed by the court. The President is subject to the law and is not a king. He said in a press release, “We will continue to challenge President Trump’s authoritarian use of U.S. military personnel against civilians.”
The governor pointed out that the court dismissed Trump’s arguments that he may federalise the California National Guard whenever he wants and still escape legal scrutiny.
“While staying an emergency district court order, the Ninth Circuit rejected Trump’s broad argument that he can federalise the National Guard for any cause and escape judicial review. According to Newsom’s press office, “This is a crucial check on presidential overreach and confirmation that the president is not above the law.”
According to Newsom’s office, he and Attorney General Rob Bonta are still determined to hold the president responsible for his use of the military for domestic law enforcement, which they claimed violated federal law.
Although Newsom says the ruling is a win, there is still an ongoing conflict, as the unanimous ruling from the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals on Thursday allowed President Trump to keep control of National Guard troops deployed to Los Angeles earlier this month to quell riots during demonstrations against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
