This PhD job will put you at the centre of Europe’s green revolution through the PHOENIX – Launch Space Power-to-X joint project, which is supported by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Research. Join a top-tier team developing diagnostic systems and digital twins for SOEC and SOFC Power-to-X technologies, opening the door to intelligent grid systems, cleaner hydrogen generation, and better energy storage.

What You’ll Be Doing?

Create sensor-based high-temperature testing apparatuses for fuel cells and next-generation electrolysis.
Create and carry out extended experiments to gather practical operational insights.

1. Create algorithms for defect detection and system health checks that are driven by models and data.
2. Use edge hardware to deploy your systems for real-time control and optimisation.
3. Build the reversible solid oxide cell (rSOC) system’s complete digital counterpart.
4. Disseminate discoveries internationally and publish in prestigious publications.
5. Work closely with interdisciplinary specialists and mentor aspiring researchers.

Who Should Apply?

1. Those have master’s degrees in energy, process, chemical, or mechanical engineering.

2. A solid foundation in process simulation, thermodynamics, heat transport, and software tools such as Matlab, Simulink, or Python.

3. It is advantageous if you have experience with electrochemistry and solid oxide electrolysis/fuel cells.

4. Proficient in both German and English, with excellent communication and analytical abilities.
